On this page, we are going to find out all about electronic structure! exciting huh..?

All of the matter of anything on earth can be broken down into tiny particles known as atoms. As chemistry students, I'm sure you know that these

atoms can be broken down into EVEN smaller particles. The atom is made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. Over the years, many scientists have had ideas about how an atom is made. The most accepted model is known as the Bohr model. This model suggests that the atom has a nucleus (made up of positively charged protons and neutrally charged neutrons) and shells surrounding (with negatively charged electrons whizzing around these at rapid pace).

ELEMENTS are substances made of only one type of atom and can be found in the periodic table made by Dmitri Mendeleev.

THE ATOMIC NUMBER tells us:

- the proton number within the nucleus of the atom.

- the number of electrons in an atom of an element.

- where it can be found in the periodic table.

THE MASS NUMBER tells us:

- the complete number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of the atom.

ISOTOPES

They are atoms of an element with the same number of protons but different number of neutrons.
